Technology isn’t just disrupting the world, it is changing parenting. Devices and connectivity give children access to information and the world. By the same token, the world (including scammers and predators) now has access to children. How do parents raise tech-savvy digital citizens who can benefit from the best that the online world has to offer and be protected from the dangers?
Whether it’s education, socialisation or entertainment, all can be found in abundance online and children seem intuitively wired from the youngest of ages to navigate virtual spaces via onscreen devices. However, children are not born responsible users of the tech to which they have access. Parents need to bridge the digital divide to their children by understanding the basics of a high tech environment and why their children find it so attractive and engaging. Families also need to continue to find ways in which to stay connected.
The Tech-Savvy Parenting author-led course, which was put together by Nikki Bush and Arthur Goldstuck, shows parents how to successfully integrate parenting into this digital world. The authors readily say that this course is not a Social Media 101 manual. It’s not meant to teach you the basics of how to operate social media – there are other courses to assist you with doing that.

Parenting doesn’t come with a manual – although many new parents wish that it did! Just as technology continues to evolve, so parenting has to keep pace and change with it, too.
